Small charmy medieval mountaintop town with a historic castle wall around it.
Kinda like a great wall of China equivalent of Georgia. Also known as part of the wine region and other romantic fables. Go to a hilltop restaurant or viewpoints and enjoy panoramic views from above. Or wander around the castle wall and cobbled roads.
About 4 hours is all you’d need. It’s a super small town.
Where to stay:
- We did a day trip, didn’t stay over. But I imagine some place near the castle walls with a view over the valley is most desirable. If not, then anything in town for convenience.
Neighborhoods, walking areas, public squares:
- Old town area. Then castle walls. Also some lookouts along the way.
Activities to do:
- Roadside viewpoints – plenty of lookouts along the way as you’re driving in. Pull over when you see a bunch of other cars or as you pass whatever interests you.
- Old town area – lots of historic buildings, panoramic views off the mountain. Many tourist shops and things.
- Signaghi Fountain – the bigger space of the town center. You’ll park your car here and then walk uphill to the castle walls and viewpoints from here.
- Sighnaghi Viewpoint – popular view along the castle walls. Cute coffee shops to sit and enjoy the view. Walk uphill passing places like Terrace Panorama or more downhill to Sighnaghi Wall. Wander as much of the wall as you like until you get tired or hungry.
- Signagi St. George Basilica – this is basically the old town area within the castle walls. Church here, many tourist things and shops on the street.
- April 9th Park – nice park to walk through. Historic buildings all around. Solomon Dodashvili Monument.
- Sighnaghi Museum – I didn’t go in but you’ll walk right past this.
- Wine-tasting – it’s part of the wine region after all.
- Tours:
- I’m not sure what they would show you. Especially if you came here using a tour, or by your own car (in which case you could look up places for yourself).
Restaurants & Cafes:
- The Terrace Signagi* – nice restaurant with a view overlooking the castle walls in the distance. Good food, good service. Must go for me.
Bars, clubs, and nightlife:
- Probably not the place for nightlife. But you can definitely enjoy a beer or wine with a view.
Miscellaneous tips:
Itinerary:
- 1 DAY – viewpoints leading up to the town, then walk around town and along the wall, then eat at restaurant with a view.
