Popular hippie beach town 4hrs drive from Rio. Many beautiful beaches all next to each other. Dirt road.
Think skin-baring locals with tattoos and dreadlocks, street vendors selling handcrafts, everybody dressed down and very relaxed. Beach bum vibe, rather than sexy posh beach vibe. Many nice beaches and different water landscapes. Also a bit touristy as many people come here.
Can be a daytrip (from Paraty) or stay a month if it suits your vibe. Generally, Trindade and Paraty are paired together on the same trip. They’re close enough to stay in one and visit the other. Their different character compliments each other well.
Where to stay:
- I did a daytrip so I’m not the best judge but Trindade isn’t big.
Hostels & Hotels:
- I didn’t stay at any but this place looks like you’ll have many nice options.
Neighborhoods, walking areas, public squares:
Activities to do:
- Beaches, bridges, water-points:
- Many beautiful beaches, all a short walk from each other.
- Center SOUTH
- These are the very first beaches you’ll visit. Not only because they’re closest to town but also because also for their unique Trindade beach landscape (rocks and lush greenery all around). Beware, they can get super crowded. Not only people, but chairs and coolers, bbq, everything everywhere due to easy car access. Most people keep walking in until they see less people.
- Praia do Meio** – the very first beach you must see and many people’s favorite. Has a picturesque big rock (Praia da Praia do Meio). Climb the rock and take photos. Checkout the shallow river pool in the back, good for kids. Then because it’s so crowded, you’ll keep walking west (into Cachadaco beach) until you see less people.
- Praia do Cachadaco** – long beautiful beach. Keep walking to the west end where it’s more peaceful and fewer people. Then do the 25min hike to the natural pools. Absolute must see.
- Piscinas naturais do Cachadaço** – natural pools with huge rocks to sit on, fish swimming in there, little caves. Go further into the back for less people, you might even have it all to yourself. It’s a beautiful nature escape. You can take a ferry boat back if you want to skip the hike.
- Center NORTH
- Praia do Rancho/Ranchos – beach looks appealing as you’re driving into town, beautiful water and many people, car parking. But it’s full of bad experiences. Rude kiosks taking over the beach with their chairs and umbrellas, aggressively selling you from overpriced menu or expensive car parking. Lots of trash left behind by people. Dogs everywhere, pooping in the sand. Skip this!
- Praia do Cepilho – long beach, no shade, busy but lots of space, strong waves for surfing (not swimming). You can decide whether to visit as you’ll drive right by it coming into Trindade. Nice for sunrise too.
- Praia de Fora – beautiful, has rocks and freshwater spring. Probably a nice sunrise spot.
- Praia da Trindade – big rocks, very strong waves (not swimmable).
- Praia Brava (Trindade) – beautiful beach, strong dangerous waves with rip currents, surfer’s beach. I heard it’s also a nude beach. Requires a short difficult hike to reach, which also passes by Cachoeira Brava waterfall.
- Far north
- Praia das Galetas – requires boat to reach.
- Praia Vermelha –
- Praia das Laranjeiras* – another local favorite. Area with several beaches. Cars can go up to 1km away, then you hike the rest passing by rich neighborhoods. The hike keeps this place peaceful without many people. Just you and really beautiful nature. Seems there are about 3 beaches in here ….
- Praia do Sonho** – one of the most beautiful beaches of the area, requires a 3km hike, has some restaurants there. Just you and nature. Can take a boat to even more remote beaches in the east.
- Praia de Antigos & Praia de Antiguinhos** – even more paradisiacal and remote, accessible only by hike or boat. Nobody here, just you and nature.
- Praia das Galhetas –
- Praia de Ponta Negra –
- 3 beaches, and natural pool
