Recharging Telcel mobile SIM card in Mexico

Very easy to recharge your SIM card, you have 3 simple options:

  • In physical store – go to any OXXO, supermarket, or kiosko type of store – tell them you want to recharge your SIM card. In Spanish, “Quiero recarger mi SIM de Telcel”. They’ll ask you what packet size. The one that makes the most sense is usually the 3GB for 200MXN option. Best size-price ratio.
  • Through app – download the MiTelcel app, and enter your phone number and creditcard and recharge through there anytime. If you don’t know what to do, go to Pacquete sin limite (packets without limits) and choose an option. It’ll say you have no money and that you need to put money in the account using the “Recarger saldo” option and here you choose exactly the amount to deposit (probably same as your packet cost) and then enter card details.
  • Through website – you can open an online account at Telcel and recharge through there; I don’t remember if they have a recharge option without an account. Or use a 3rd-party recharge service website…but these will tack on their own fee on top of it.

After paying, you should receive an SMS. And then after like 10 minutes, the internet should start working. Just know that sometimes Telcel doesn’t work or works slowly.
