Montenegro – quick travel guide

Recent popular “cheaper” European tourist destination, known for beaches and mountains.

Most foreigners know Montenegro for its beaches. Other nearby Balkans know Montenegro for its mountains as well. I personally prefer it for the mountains. Perhaps Montenegro was a cheap alternative 10-20 years ago but its certainly caught up now. If you want cheap, you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Nonetheless, it’s still worth visiting if even just to see something new. The vibe is somewhat similar to Croatia and Serbia depending on where you go.

A week to see main sights. But 2 weeks is you really want to understand the beauty of its nature.

General tips for traveling in Montenegro:

Itinerary suggestions:

Montenegro cities (* = recommended, ** = must see):

  • Tivat, Podgorica – common airport cities where you fly in.
  • Budva – beautiful beach area with medieval old town architecture. Probably the most tourist area in Montenegro. Lots more to do. But pretty much like any other Mediterranean town.
  • Kotor – another popular beach/bay area of Montenegro, and #1 most recommended. Beautiful charm and surrounded by nature. Some people say it’s quiet and boring, not many to do but actually has enough to keep you occupied. Some say definitely better than Dubrovnik. Doesn’t have real beaches, the nicer ones are artificial/man-made and nowhere as nice as ones in Budva.
  • Kolasin – vibrant small mountain with many nature activities. Popular for summer nature or winter ski getaways. Cute little town to stay within. Or go some distance out and get incredible views, but you’ll need a car.
