Guatape – quick travel guide

Colorful small town with lush green landscape reaching across the water like many fingers.

Very touristic and beautiful, definitely worth a visit! The whole town looks like it was designed by kids. Then you go up the famous Piedra del Penon rock and see beautiful views of the landscape from above. Believe me when I tell you, I’ve been to many places and seen many beautiful views…but Guatape has its unique views with the green lands extending out all over the water. It’s very cool.

Day trip would be enough to see its main points if you don’t have time. Staying 1 or 2 nights if you have a fun AirBnB would be a great way to chill with friends. Depending on what you book, you’ll have a very different experience of Guatape.

Where to stay:

  • Town center – this is what most people try to do, as it makes sense to be by the city center and close to the square and busy areas. It’s totally fine if you want something cheap and easily accessible…but it’s not the most fun IMO.
  • On the water – I would get something either near the water or overlooking the water views. This is the most vibey if you want to have that resorty chillax stay in Guatape, instead of a touisty town center vibe.
  • By the rock – some people actually stay by the rock. I think it could be cool too, I did see shops and restaurants over there but I’m really not sure what it’s like at night. For sure, it would be super convenient during the day since you’re already there and don’t need to get transportation there.

Where you stay in Guatape greatly affects your experience. And for this reason, you might hear extremely conflicting opinions of Guatape.
