Greece – quick travel guide

The famous country of ancient mythical gods and present-day picturesque beaches.

Greece to me is a mix between Italy and Turkey. And in so many ways. Culturally, historically, architecturally, ethnically…it’s a mix of the Italian Mediterranean vibes of Turkish Arabian influences. Personalities of the people are also a bit similar to me…something between Italian warmth and Turkish fire/sassiness. Pricewise, it’s also in the middle of those 2.

I haven’t spent enough time to really know all about Greece but can suggest you look carefully at why you’re going. I think back in the days, Greece was considered as a cheaper beach alternative to Italy. Today…if you’re really looking for a cheap beach destination, maybe Montenegro or Albania is for you. Greece is indeed still cheaper than Italy in general but not like it used to be. But if you know that what you really seek is specifically Greek culture and greek things, then yes of course…go to Greece.

Greece needs a minimum of 5-7 days. So you can do a couple days in Athens (seeing historic stuff), then check out the beach life on some islands. If you wanted to do more, 10-15 days should be solid to see a variety of places.

General tips for traveling in Greece:

  • Slow internet – I experienced slow internet in just about every AirBnB I’ve rented. And then read online that Greece has the slowest fixed internet in Europe? I’m guessing its major cities are too big and hilly and small cities are too isolated. And the country overall economically and infrastructure-wise is not as developed as other EU countries.
  • Public transportation – like any big country, they have trains and buses and metros and such. In smaller towns, there are only taxis and buses. And maybe a private shuttle if you’re staying at certain hotels. You’ll find it more convenient to rent a car or just book your accommodations close to areas you want to visit.
  • KTEL Bus Station – can be found in (I assume) every city. Go to their website or in person to buy tickets. Buses do get full so I’d book tickets a few days earlier if I were you.
  • Rideshare – Uber & Free Now are the best rideshare companies here. And sometimes both get really busy and you may have to keep searching and searching to find one.
  • Taxi – yes, there are standard flat rate from airport and what not but careful, many will try to cheat you and say that your ride costs extra because of BS reasons like “it’s not in the center” when in fact you are in the center. Taxis are safest when called through rideshare apps.

Miscellaneous tips:

  • Tap water – the locals will tell you not to drink it. And that bottled water is so cheap from the store.
  • Customer service – I’ve found most customer service people in Greece are especially rude or impatient with foreigners. Not all, but a good chunk are. Don’t expect fast courteous service like you would in America.
  • Commercial beach space – there’s been a lot of fights between local people and local businesses on beaches. Apparently, the beaches should be free to anyone and everyone to stay without having to pay. But many local businesses take over the beaches…(illegally) putting and renting out sun lounges and other beach furniture.

Safety tips:

  • Pickpockets – are common. Careful in crowded areas and public transportation, metros, etc.
  • Violent crimes – I’m sure it exists in Athens but I really haven’t seen any.

Greece cities (* = recommended, ** = must see):

  • Athens* – biggest city and popular tourist destination. But to me, it’s a more rundown version of Rome. Less epic, less pretty, fewer pretty places, fewer monuments and important places/statues. The comments about Athens being ugly and dirty are very fair! However it’s also cheaper than Italy and feels more authentically Greek and not as overly-touristy as Italy. Only reasons to go here is to be in a cheap big city, shopping, enjoy local vibe, and see historic places like Acropolis ruins. Other than that…I think most tourists are expecting islands and beach vibe of Greece, which is NOT Athens.
  • Mykonos
  • Santorini
  • Kalamata

Generally, people come to Greece for the Greek islands with picturesque landscapes and beautiful beach water. Most people will tell you to skip Athens, or go there only for the historic sights and leave immediately to the beach places.
